Biography
Sol Liber (1923–2018) was a Polish-born Jewish resistance fighter and Holocaust survivor. Born in Grojec, Poland, he was drafted into the Polish army at just 15. After Poland's surrender, he and his family were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto, where he joined the Jewish resistance. He risked his life smuggling children through the sewers and later fought in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
Following the uprising, Liber was captured by the Nazis and survived internment in Treblinka, Majdanek, and Buchenwald concentration camps. He was liberated in 1945 and eventually immigrated to Canada. In 1957, he moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Bella, where they raised three children.
Sol Liber was among the first survivors to participate in the USC Shoah Foundation’s efforts to document Holocaust testimonies. His interview, archived as testimony No. 50, remains a powerful account of resistance, survival, and resilience. He dedicated much of his later life to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and sharing his story with younger generations.
He passed away at age 94, remembered for his courage, perseverance, and commitment to truth and remembrance.
